Achieving 3D cleaning, shaping, and obturation of root canals has always been the sought-after objective in endodontic treatment, a goal that often proved to be challenging. The development of the Self-Adjusting File (SAF) System aimed to address various limitations inherent in current rotary file systems.
The SAF System is centered around a hollow, highly compressible file designed to adapt itself three-dimensionally to the contours of a given root canal, including its cross-section. Operating with a vibratory in-and-out motion, the file is coupled with continuous irrigation delivered by a peristaltic pump through its hollow structure. This approach ensures the uniform removal of a layer of dentin from the entire circumference of the root canal, accomplishing the primary objectives of root canal treatment while safeguarding the remaining root dentin.
The 3D scrubbing effect of the file, in conjunction with a continuous supply of fresh irrigants, leads to remarkably clean canals, facilitating improved obturation. Simultaneously, the SAF System achieves the additional goal of more effectively disinfecting flat-oval root canals. The safety of root canal treatment is significantly improved through the system’s high mechanical stability and the implementation of a novel no-pressure irrigation concept.
In essence, the SAF System brings operators notably closer to the longstanding aspiration of achieving 3D root-canal treatment.
